Arthur Cayley was one of the founders of modern algebra. He introduced a systematic theory of matrices, studied invariants of algebraic forms, and helped make groups an abstract mathematical structure. His work connected algebra, geometry, and combinatorics; the Cayley-Hamilton theorem and Cayley formula are named after him.
