Hungarian mathematician who proved that every dense subset of the integers contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions.

Endre Szemerédi proved the theorem that bears his name in 1975, solving a conjecture of Erdős and Turán. His work created a bridge between extremal combinatorics, additive number theory, and ergodic theory, and inspired later developments by Gowers and others.
