English mathematician who transformed analytic number theory and produced influential work on inequalities, series, and prime numbers.
G. H. Hardy developed the analytic theory of numbers with Littlewood and helped establish the circle method. He proved deep results on the distribution of primes, partition functions, and Diophantine approximation, and recognized Ramanujan's extraordinary talent. Hardy also wrote the influential A Course of Pure Mathematics.
