Problem 2

For which real numbers xx does the inequality 4x2(1−1+2x)2<2x+9\dfrac{4x^2}{\left(1-\sqrt{1+2x}\right)^2} < 2x+9 hold?
Step 2 of 5: Substitution to remove the square root
x=−12+a22, a≥0  ⟹  1+2x=ax=-\tfrac12+\tfrac{a^2}{2},\ a\ge0 \implies \sqrt{1+2x}=a
Detailed analysis

Since x≥−12x\ge-\tfrac12, write 1+2x=a21+2x=a^2 with a≥0a\ge0, i.e. x=a2−12x=\tfrac{a^2-1}{2}. This turns the awkward square root into the ordinary variable aa, and the forbidden value x=0x=0 becomes simply a≠1a\neq1.
